An ever-present mechanic in video games, healing in all of its forms has been a little bit of a pet peeve for me; I've been both amused and annoyed at all the ways it's been implemented. The clear motivation for healing in games is that it's a convenient way to avoid player frustration; who wants to play a crippled character for however long? Yet I'd like to suggest that we start searching either for alternative ways of implementing healing, or abandon the mechanic altogether in favor of some other way to avoid the frustrations of playing with an injured character.

Whatever else I'm about to say, I have to acknowledge that Spec Ops: The Line is both brave and ambitious. Trying to talk about the psychological cost of war and the nature of player complicity is a difficult thing to attempt in a videogame, especially a third-person shooter. And credit where it's due, there are some truly inspired design decisions scattered throughout. It is also foolish and cowardly, in its own way, content to reference and reflect instead of truly understanding or improving. But though I believe the game to be a failure, it is a supremely interesting one. Perhaps even important.

My purpose here is to investigate a simple question: Can video games successfully pull off a 'tragic' or 'downer' ending, given the constraint that games must respect player agency to a certain degree? Let us assume at the outset that in the hypothetical game in question, the tragic or otherwise 'negative' outcome is merely one of many possible outcomes in the game, which comes about depending upon the player's choices up to that point. One of the few upsides of the whole Mass Effect 3 ending controversy has been that it has offered a unique opportunity to explore the nature of videogames as an art form, and to examine the manner in which they are received by their audience. However, in many ways it is the response that has been reflected in the multiform hydra of the gaming media that has been particularly extraordinary – if at times rather alarming. The unsettling part of this arises because – even if one puts aside the proliferation of painfully reductive terminology like 'Entitled', 'Retake', 'Whiners', 'Artistic Integrity', those who 'get it', 'Vocal Minorities', 'Pro-' and 'Anti-Enders' – the mass media has delivered some mystifyingly antagonistic responses to the negative fan feedback, and exhibited disappointingly out-dated thinking about 'Art', applying anachronistic definitions to the videogame form as though they were still applicable.
